Germanic Bear Dog: Family-related four-legged friend

A Germanic Bear Dog is the ideal family dog. He is not only cuddly and fond of children – the well-being of his master is essential to him. Read below what characterizes the gentle giant.

He is gentle and attentive – and a Germanic Bear Dog has many other traits that make him the ideal family member. But the imposing dog also looks back on a long history.

A breed with a long tradition

The history of the Germanic Bear Dog goes far back into the past. They already existed when the Germans went on migration between 375 and 568 AD. They needed guard dogs that were agile, persistent, and alert simultaneously: a Germanic bear dog was ideal for this. The history of the large four-legged friends goes back to the Roman Empire since the dogs were taken to Italy as booty during the wars.

Germanic Bear Dog: Fond of children and gentle

The Germanic Bear Dog has retained its character traits to this day, making it a valuable member of the family. He is very outgoing and friendly towards other people and animals. Its hunting instinct is only weak, and aggression is far from the gentle animal. Instead of hunting, the dog prefers to protect its “herd” – in this case, it’s master. You are his top priority. In addition, a Germanic bear dog is considered to be very obedient and good-natured and usually has a huge heart for children.

Imposing giants with a cuddle factor

A Germanic Bear Dog bears its name for a reason: the breed’s appearance is reminiscent of a bear – a substantial cuddly bear. As with most dog breeds, the males of the Germanic Bear Dog differ from the females. While males reach a shoulder height of between 70 and 85 centimetres with a weight of 50 to 85 kilograms, the bitches are more delicate. Their size varies between 65 and 80 centimetres, weighing between 35 and 70 kilograms. The fur of the animals is never pure white or black. Instead, it is blond, grey, blond, dark blond or deer red. The mask of the animal is usually darker than the rest of the body.
